I agree with dina and you, Ralphie. I recall the old "separate but equal" song and dance in the late 50's and early 60's. There was a lot of separate and very little equal even with the 1964 Civil Rights Act. We've been fighting, one way or the other, for equal protection under the law for all our citizens ever since. It frustrates the hell out of me that we have to fight another day but so be it. Fight we will.

Bullshit is right. I am beyond outraged that these guys are all too happy to feed at the public trough, but when it comes to actually serving "we the people" won't allow a vote because they are afraid it might win. Don Coram was just making a pathetic excuse for subverting the will of the people, and by his vote saying his son does not deserve ALL the rights of an American citizen, just so he could look good to his far right constituents who are all about reducing people's rights. I would be proud to have Dee Coram for a son and I would support him in every way I could.

All I could think of this afternoon while listening to the committee audio was thank God there are House districts more competitive than ours come November. After the last week - there some very motivated voters ready to take back the majority.

Have had some time this morning to go back through your blogs covering the end of session fiasco. Thanks for the informative and interesting updates. I for one really appreciate your efforts. It will be interesting to see what games McNulty and Stevens play come Monday.

I too give Hick and our President a tip of the chapeau for taking a stand for equality. On a personal level I wonder if my brother's life would have been less alienating and difficult if he and his partner could have had the sanctuary of a recognized union.
Too late for him as his s.o. died many years ago. Very sad. Maybe there is hope for others who didn't chose such a personal difference but find themselves ostracized and marginalized.

A easily understood amendment - how refreshing. No wonder if passed as amended. We can only hope it makes it as amended through the final hoops.
Thanks for the post, Ralphie.

In fairness to Ashby, sometimes it's hard to follow what's going on at a hearing because the proposed amendments aren't posted in advance. In fact, they usually don't show up until the journal is published, and sometimes even later. Fortunately, the drafters are very friendly people, and once an amendment has been approved, they'll gladly send it to you. All you have to do is ask. The drafter's name and phone number are listed at the top of the bill.

Compare the language of lines 5-14 in the bill before it was amended with the language of the amendment, which struck lines 5-14 and replaced them with new language.

Old language:

5 salaries - reports. (6) NOTWITHSTANDING ANY OTHER PROVISION OF THIS
6 ARTICLE, THE POWER OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF EACH
7 COUNTY TO ADOPT AN ANNUAL BUDGET FOR THE OPERATION OF THE
8 COUNTY GOVERNMENT PURSUANT TO SECTION 30-11-107 (2) (a), C.R.S.,
9 SHALL INCLUDE THE BUDGET OF THE OFFICE OF THE PUBLIC TRUSTEE.
10 EACH PUBLIC TRUSTEE SHALL MAKE APPROPRIATE BUDGET
11 RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE OPERATION OF THE OFFICE OF THE PUBLIC
12 TRUSTEE EACH YEAR TO THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS IN THE
13 COUNTY IN WHICH HE OR SHE SERVES AND SHALL BE SUBJECT TO ALL
14 OTHER PROVISIONS OF SECTION 30-11-107 (2) (a), C.R.S.

New language:

1 Amend reengrossed bill, page 2, strike lines 5 through 14 and substitute
2 "salaries - reports. (6) THE PUBLIC TRUSTEE OF EACH COUNTY SHALL
3 ADOPT A BUDGET PURSUANT TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF PART 1 OF ARTICLE
4 1 OF TITLE 29, C.R.S., AND SHALL SUBMIT THE BUDGET TO THE BOARD OF
5 COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF THE COUNTY IN WHICH HE OR SHE SERVES FOR
6 REVIEW BY THE BOARD.".

See the difference? Under the old language, the Trustee had to ask, "Mother may I?" Not so under the amendment.

The Sentinel/Ashby on-line version this morning (6 a.m.) omitted the whole amendment explanation on the Trustee bill; 30 minutes ago the story was gone when I went back to double check for any corrections. They so want the House version of the "get Paul Brown" bill, they can't even report it's latest status.

God Bless Junction Daily Blog. Without it I'd be sorely pressed to stay on top of much of what is going on at the legislature.

There's no such thing as a stupid question, just stupid people. In 2012, far to many stupid people are trying (and sometimes succeeding) to set policy. Would that you and people like you, Ralphie, were in Congress.

I don't expect the Governor to read all the local papers in the state or be up to speed on the local petty politics of the Sentinel and two of our county commissioners. What I do expect is for him to have a staff that researches the background and what precipitated the action of a given piece of legislation by a legislator. A one page briefing paper is neither hard to research and write or for him to read.

It's bad enough the Governor is Denvercentric (?) to a fault, he also seems hell bent to compromise with R's to the point where he'll embarrass the hell out of a good and loyal Democratic appointee.
