The Big Whistle |

I wanted to add a story to last night's blog, but my server was down for a restart. Since Vineland Networks hosts the Daily Blog for free, I figured I'd just write about it tonight without complaining.
The Big Whistle, former NHL referee Bill Chadwick, passed away yesterday.
Even if you're a die-hard Avs fan, you probably don't remember The Big Whistle because he was important to hockey well before your time (1939-1955).
I got familiar with The Big Whistle when he served as the color man for New York Rangers broadcasts featuring Marv Albert between 1965 and 1974. He and Albert were so good that I used to turn off the sound on my TV and listen to the Rangers on the radio. In the days before the Janet Jackson five-second delay, Albert was crisp, far more crisp than TV announcers, with his narrative of each pass. Bill Chadwick was there with color on every faceoff.
Chadwick was the first American to referee in the National Hockey League. He invented the system of hand signals that are used by today's officials. He is one of only five officials, and the first American, to be inducted into the NHL Hall of Fame.
The Big Whistle was 94. RIP, Bill.

Paul Schockley of the Daily Sentinel, formerly of the Free Press when it was still worth reading, is doing a great job of keeping the Grand Junction Police Department and Mesa County Sheriff's Department honest.
Today, he ran internal investigation reports for the GJPD and the MCSO that he obtained under the Colorado Open Records Act.
Save for jail employees who seem to be expendable, few officers seem to face legal action for their alleged misdeeds. Each department seems to work nearly entirely within internal "administrative" systems.
The GJPD already has new leadership. The Sheriff's Department desperately needs new leadership. Sheriff Stan Hilkey wants four more years. I don't think he deserves four more years, do you?

From today's Daily Sentinel:The college has a history of hiring former political workers and those connected to them. Wagner’s co-workers at the college include Vice President of Student Services John Marshall, who ran Republican Bob Beauprez’s gubernatorial campaign in 2006, and Acting Director of Development Kristi Pollard, the sister of Sen. Josh Penry, R-Grand Junction, and a former Chevron spokeswoman. I'm glad the Sentinel reporters still read the Daily Blog to get their story ideas.
If you want to help the Daily Blog continue to turn over rocks and be there first, please hit the "Donate" button on the right side of the page. Those of you who have been generous enough to do so know who you are. So do I, and I appreciate each and every one of you.
On a somewhat related note, Mesa State President Tim Foster wants more control of the College's finances.
I don't doubt it. I'm sure there are still many Republican political operatives out there who need high-paying jobs.

I hope the Chicago Bears are happy with their $30,000,000 quarterback.
Cutler really sucked today. But that's Jay Cutler. Flashes of brilliance interspersed with loads of week-to-week mistakes.
More than twenty years ago, I got a lousy performance review from a supervisor who I really respect even to this day. He said, "Ralph, this isn't a 'potential' review, it's a 'performance' review." That's exactly how I feel about Cutler.
