Great Game

February 28, 2010

For those who don't watch much hockey, and there are many of you, what you watched today (if you watched the Olympics) was more exciting than Stanley Cup game seven.

I wrote down lots of analysis during the game, but none of it mattered. Team USA's tying goal with 24 seconds left to force overtime was about as good as it gets. The fact that Team Canada scored the winning goal in overtime made it a less than ideal day, but it was still a great game, one of the best I have ever watched.

U.S. goalie Ryan Miller was named the most valuable player in the tournament. I'm sure he would rather have had a gold medal. Before any of you blame Miller for the losing goal in overtime, don't. The defenseman that was behind Sid Crosby when he fired the winning shot (I didn't get his number) should have been in front of him. You're taught from peewees on, don't bunch up in the corners. The U.S. did. That gave Crosby unimpeded access to the net for his last shot.

Congratulations to Vancouver for putting on a great Olympics. Medal count aside, there were many great stories in these games. I guess if I had to choose, my top three were the U.S. Nordic combined team working their assess off for years and winning four medals (one gold and three silvers), USA Sled 1 winning the four-man bobsled for the first time in 62 years, and Bode Miller finally redeeming himself with a gold, silver, and bronze after being blanked in Torino.

Oh, that and Neil Young being asked to sing at the closing ceremony.

The other night, I was listening to an all-night sports radio talk-show host dump on the winter Olympics. I don't share his disdain. There's more to life than the NFL, NASCAR, and the NBA.

God bless those people who choose to be the best in obscure sports like curling and biathlon. Toiling for something that doesn't pay millions of dollars per year makes them very special athletes indeed.

We need to hire Barry Manilow or somebody to write us a national anthem as good as "O Canada." You know, something that normal people can actually sing.
