Almost Good

March 1, 2010

As one of yesterday's commenters opined, last night's Olympic closing ceremony was a bit of an embarrassment for the host nation.

Maybe that was the point--"We Canadians can laugh at ourselves." But when you're on the world stage, why would you want to laugh at yourselves?

Neil Young was good. "Long May You Run" was a good song choice for a group of young athletes. But inflatable beavers? Dancing fur trappers in canoes? Twenty-foot tall table hockey players? An inflatable moose?

William Shatner? Catherine O'Hara? Michael J. Fox? I was surprised that they didn't just trot out Bob and Doug McKenzie. They would have been at least as appropriate, eh?

Olympics, great. Closing ceremony? Epic fail, you hosers.

This is almost a good idea. What is wrong with it is that it is a band-aid on a serious problem. I-70 is inadequate in places. It's going to take money to fix it. Putting a band-aid on that problem is a great way to make sure it doesn't get fixed for years.

You want services? You want infrastructure? It costs money.

----------

This is almost a good bill.

I think it's a great idea to renew auto registrations every two years instead of every year. Even though it would cost money to issue refunds to people who sell their cars before two years is up, it will probably cost less than sending a letter to every car owner every year.

The reason why it's almost a good bill, instead of being a really good bill, is that Steve King couldn't resist stuffing a little partisanship into it. The Republicans would like to pin late auto registration fees on Governor Ritter.

What ever happened to the Republican ideal of personal responsibility? Late fees are late fees. You know when the bill is due, pay it. It's entirely within your control. If you're late paying to renew your license plates, it's not Governor Ritter's fault. It's your own damned fault.

I don't have any problem with late fees. I pay my bills on time. I think late fees are far preferable to giving interest-free loans to people who can't get their shit together to pay a bill on time.
