Game Day, Mixed Bag

January 3, 2006

After boycotting Tostitos since the week after Thanksgiving over the Fiesta Bowl's inexplicable snub of Penn State and their selection of lower-ranked Ohio State to play Notre Dame, game day is finally here for Nittany Lions fans. Penn State is currently a 7-1/2 to 8-1/2 point favorite over Florida State. My advice? Take the points. In big games, Penn State rarely covers the spread. Other ominous signs: the Big-10 is only 2-4 in bowl games this year. And even worse, Joe Pa was on the cover of Sports Illustrated a few weeks ago. In games where the coaching matchup was a bigger story than either team, Paterno, no matter how much I revere him, was 0-for-everything against Bear Bryant. He's also 0-1 against Bobby Bowden. Take the points.

But root for the Lions.

I would have to characterize as “muted disappointment” our local legislators' reaction to the appointment of Barbara Kirkmeyer to head the Department of Local Affairs. Nobody from this side of the hill seems to have anything nice to say about her, but nobody wants to get on her bad side either. Kirkmeyer, a former Weld County Commissioner turned professional political appointee, seems to need constant reminders that there is more to Colorado than I-25.

Colorado political watchers, myself included, were stunned to read about the resignation of Lakewood Republican State Senator Norma Anderson just a week before what would have been her 20th session in the State Legislature. Senator Anderson was from a different era; an era when “the process” was more important that toxic politics. She will be missed by legislators on both sides of the aisle, but will be especially missed by the people of Colorado, who she always put first.
